Quickly hailed as one of the most memorable social events of the year, The Frick Collection’s summer party made its debut in 2008.  Growing every year, and attended by more than 400 people last night, the focal point was the otherwise private 70th Street Garden (designed by the legendary landscape architect Russell Page).  There, by the pond filled with lotus plants and water lilies, guests kept cool with wines provided by Anna de Cordorníu (Cava Brut and Cava Rose) and Raimat Winery (Raimat Albarino and Raimat Chardonnay).  Also on offer were hors d’oeuvres by Creative Edge; the night’s signature cocktail, lemonade vodka with a sprig of thyme; and cool, swinging jazz by The Flail, a popular quartet.

Well before this spring’s royal wedding drew attention to fashionable headgear, hats and fascinators were becoming de regeur at the Frick’s summer party.  Snappy toppers were found in even greater numbers this year—in all shapes, sizes, colors, and materials.  Among them were big-brimmed dishes, bell-shaped cloches, toy hats cocked to the side with a swagger, and even a sparkly wrapped turban.

Guests also enjoyed the interior Garden Court, created in 1935 by John Russell Pope, and, of course, the permanent collection galleries, which feature masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Renoir, and others.  On view, too, were the museum’s acclaimed seasonal exhibitions, In a New Light: Bellini’s St. Francis in the Desert and Turkish Taste at the Court of Marie-Antoinette

Proceeds from the event will support the full range of programs at The Frick Collection, including educational and curatorial initiatives and Library activities.
